Highlights from our Open Meeting on 19 May 2017
We agreed to add a strapline to our name, so we are now called:
Grassroots Wirksworth – For a Sustainable Future
Our re-vamped website is now live, so do have a look:
Grassroots Wirksworth is also listed in Community Groups on the new GoWirksworth website – as a whole group and also the individual Action Groups, with links from one to the other. Grassroots Wirksworth, Activists, Growers, Energy & Housing, Waste & Recycling
Latest news from our groups:
Our Activists
Went to a good Anti-fracking training in Sheffield and did networking with other groups campaigning in the area. Much signing by all members of online petitions.
Growers
Have attracted some dynamic new members with skills and enthusiasm. The group were asked by local Rotary to help with their annual fundraising Plant Sale on 13th May, so many Growers grew lots of vegetables. Money raised for local charities from plant sales was £1700, an increase of £300 on last year, and Rotary think a lot of that increase was due to the participation of the Growers. A good example of partnership.
Energy and Housing
The Community Land Trust continues to work towards registration as a Charity and will then be able to apply for funding, also making links with District and Town Council. Slow but positive movement.
Waste & Recycling
Are pursuing definitions of different types of plastic for recycling purposes, also exploring how to get plastic film recycled locally.
After the meeting was finished, we enjoyed the finger food and drinks that members brought, got to know each other better, and did a lot of valuable networking!
